of high-profile greenies. Regardless of the source, the beauty industry
has begun to heed the call of environmentalism.
It may not be the easiest shade of lipstick or blush
to carry off, but beauty brands are—increasingly—going green with their
cosmetics.
Though the cosmetics industry is increasingly fond of
the words "organic" and "natural," no standards currently exist for their
use on items ranging from shampoos to eye shadows.
Corn, soy and sun may sound like the perfect elements
of a Midwestern landscape. But, more and more, such formulas are coming
to define cosmetics packaging.
Enviromental activist and Natural Resources Defense Council
trustee Elizabeth Wiatt is spreading the word about leading an eco-conscious
lifestyle.

Luxury knit line Inhabit is jumping on the green bandwagon for spring with an organic division and its first T-shirt collection.

Monarchy, Linda Loudermilk, Gary Harvey Creative, Evidence of Evolution, The Battalion, Peligrosa
and a dozen eco-minded labels touted that message this month at presentations of their
spring collections at BoxEight, Smashbox Studios and other events during Los Angeles Fashion Week.
Physicians Formula is going natural with the launch of
Organic Wear, the first certified organic makeup line to be sold in the
mass market.
"Today, we think nutritional complements are indispensable
to beauty," said Natacha Dzikowski, global brand image director of Sephora
France, in Paris.
First-half profits at Shiseido Co. Ltd. jumped 37.9 percent
year-on-year to 12.9 billion yen, or $108.2 million at average exchange,
on sales that increased 4.5 percent to 362.87 billion yen, or $3.04 billion.
Designers searched for updates of bestsellers such as
metallic finishes and prints as they surveyed a growing number of eco-friendly
fabrics at two textile shows here last week.
Sustainable clothing is evolving rapidly both for consumers and the industry.
With global retail sales of organic cotton
topping $1 billion last year, companies in the supply chain
are searching for the best way to maintain sales momentum and
deal with climate change, high oil prices and savvy consumers.
Held in ABC Carpet & Home, the eco-friendly "FutureFashion"
show Wednesday included looks from 12 designer lines such as Halston,
Peter Som, Daryl K, and Oscar de la Renta.
Interstoff Asia Essential featured 200 exhibitors showing
mostly high-performance fabrics highlighted by one of the industry's major
emerging trends: environmentally friendly fibers, dyes and fabrics.
Stella McCartney is bringing a "green" collection exclusively
to Barneys New York. The specialty retailer asked the designer, who has
famously renounced meat and leather, to create the line.
A clearer system for classifying natural and organic
products, plus the rise of new niche brands and legislation were the hot
topics discussed during the fifth annual Beyond Beauty trade show, held
Oct. 1 to 4 in the Paris suburb of Villepinte

York reported a steady flow of foot traffic in their booths and a strong
appetite among buyers for all things eco-friendly and sustainable.
