Fashion East RTW Spring 2015

The show rolled on after an accident, with designers Helen Lawrence, Louise Alsop and Ed Marler unveiling their spring offerings.

Fashion East, a seasonal showcase of three emerging designers, was interrupted briefly after an accident happened on the venue’s roof midway through the event (see related fashion scoop). The show rolled on, however, with designers Helen Lawrence, Louise Alsop and Ed Marler unveiling their spring offerings.

Lawrence, a Central Saint Martins M.A. graduate who’s making a name for herself as a knitwear designer, showed a sexy, insouciant collection featuring lots of raw edges, exaggerated sleeves and barely there knits. Among the standouts was a bubble-gum-pink knit dress, longer in the back than the front, with white cross details on the front, a navy blue cropped racer-back top and miniskirt and a rose-pink sweater with long, skinny sleeves.

Alsop, whose budding list of retailers includes Joyce in Hong Kong, sent out a polished lineup of tough-girl looks with a soft edge. There were long, hand-shredded jersey dresses, shorter frocks in a graffitilike print with floaty panels on the back and liquid black-silk dresses with spaghetti straps — styled with white sneakers for a youthful spin.

Ed Marler, who graduated from Central Saint Martins with a B.A. last year, was the wild card in this fashion pack, sending out a stream of shipwrecked pirates. Looks included what appeared to be the distressed remains of 18th-century brocade topcoats, a cropped raw-edged white dress — for that desert island wedding — and skinny trousers paved with glittering gold sequins and torn at the knee. Is this where the treasure’s been hidden all along? There were a few more commercial offerings, too, as in one brocade jacket cut as if it were a denim jacket with dramatic bell-like sleeves.
