IN ANOTHER LIFETIME: The preshow scramble at Carolina Herrera Monday could not have been more removed from Christina Ricci’s upcoming role as Lizzie Borden, who in 1892 was acquitted of axing her father and stepmother to death. It’s not the folk rhyme “Lizzie-Borden took an axe, gave her mother 40 whacks, when she’d seen what she had done, she gave her father 41” or the corseted costumes that stayed with Ricci, but the back story.
Before shooting the Lifetime movie, the actress researched the native of Fall River, Mass., who was the first American woman ever to have been accused of such an heinous act. “There are so many theories about her, music, [an Agnes de Mille] ballet. I studied and studied, and read as much as I could about her psychological profile, detective reports and everything else,” she said. “I think it was [triggered by] incest and the rage turned to violence.
“It was very tough to get into the mind of this person, who I think knew she was deceiving people and at the same time she was acting innocent.” Even though Borden walked and the crime remains unsolved, Ricci said, “Definitely guilty — gotta say.”
Along with Ricci, Uma Thurman, Coca Rocha and Dita Von Teese, Michelle Dockery of “Downton Abbey” was another front-rower. The actress perked up when Graydon Carter paid a call on his way out of the show. But when it came to postshow small talk, Dockery was, well, oh-so-very Lady Marylike. “I loved it — so elegant, beautiful,” she said of Carolina Herrera’s Kinetic Art-inspired collection. As for whether it is difficult to live her own life when so many people are always asking about her Lady Mary character, she said, “I’m not taking any questions or doing any interviews."
Not known for overtaxing herself, Fran Lebowitz attended Carolina Herrera’s fashion show with Graydon Carter and said this was her second show of fashion week — the first being Diane von Furstenberg. But now she was done. So what are her plans for the rest of the week? “The rest of my actual life,” she quipped.
