As the official designer for the British teams competing in the upcoming London 2012 Olympic Games, Stella McCartney is in a sporty state of mind. A crisp fusion of performance, femininity and comfort invigorated her spring show, which opened and closed with Natalia Vodianova looking toned, tanned, healthy and happy — the embodiment of the vitality projected by the clothes.

One of the main motifs was cresting curlicue embroideries that edged the scalloped hems of miniskirts and the lapels on blazers. It offered a fresh, neo-Baroque element to the sportswear, which was divided into tank dresses and tailoring. The former, short and formfitting, looked like two dresses layered together, a one-shoulder silk piece slung over sporty mesh. They came in fresh combinations of white, black and cobalt blue. McCartney’s signature men’s wear styles, meanwhile, looked brilliant in white bonded materials, a clean-lined baseball jacket in particular.

The second half of the show introduced Charvet-like prints and paisleys, shown on spare, tailored jumpsuits and easy men’s pajama looks that conveyed a sense of leisure. “Relax,” they seemed to say. The prints were reworked on little day dresses, mixed up on one look for a printed take on colorblocking, with mesh insets traced in curlicues. Shorter, tighter versions emerged for the finale: body-hugging with sheer mesh panels down the side. They were sporty, sexy and perfect for showing off a figure hard-earned at the gym.
