The front row at Prabal Gurung’s runway show on Saturday afternoon was awash with the pinks and reds of his last collection. Amanda Seyfried, for example, sported a long-sleeved rosy-hued resort look. She showed some nerves at the popping flashbulbs nearby.
“I haven’t really done this before," Seyfried murmured. A nearby friend urged her on: “But you’re an icon now…live it."
The actress smiled and settled in the front row next to Elettra Wiedemann. Not everyone was as camera-shy. Nicki Minaj arrived to her own flurry of camera-flashes. The gigantic pink sateen bow atop the pile of pale pink hair on Minaj’s head was barely visible through the fracas. (Anna dello Russo peered through the crowd and exclaimed “It’s Lady Gaga!”)
Minaj was happy to support Gurung, and to have John Demsey as her date. “Well, we did Pink Friday, my lipstick with M.A.C. together,” the rapper said with a cotton-candy smile. “Prabal’s an artist, he really is, and obviously,” Minaj paused to pat the bands of tulle tutu surrounding her waist, “I love fashion."
Also on hand were a more demure Barbara Bush, Jessica Joffe and Maggie Betts, who arrived together and whispered behind their hands for most of the show. The Clarins-Courtins clan, the newest fashion-darling flock of leggy blondes, was also there, gossiping in French. Rachel Zoe had arrived earlier to get a preview backstage, but she wasn’t the only one with a leg up.
“I’ve loved Prabal forever," Olivia Chantecaille said, clad in a black lacy vintage dress. “I knew about him before anybody else. I saw a preview of this collection, it’s wonderful. But what’s with this weather? It’s either too hot or it’s raining. And I am not prepared for rain. Let’s hope it ends before the show stops…Fashion karma. It’s all we can hope for.”
Ungaro chief Jeffry Aronsson was also in the house.
“I always keep an eye for great talent,” he said, adding that he was at the show for his separate consulting business, not Ungaro.
