Paul Smith Kicks Off Tokyo Fashion Week

Designer recapped his men's and women's spring-summer collections.

Paul Smith staged a runway show of his spring collection to open Tokyo fashion week

TOKYO — In a gesture of support for Japan, his largest market, Paul Smith staged a special runway show of his spring-summer collection to open Tokyo fashion week.

"I feel exhausted but I feel elated," Smith said after his Sunday show. "It was a big honor to open Tokyo fashion week, especially in this year, when you've had so much tragedy in Japan."

The show demonstrated the designer's skill for tailoring with slim-fitting separates for men and women in classic shades of navy, terra cotta and white, as well as brights like turquoise, magenta and royal blue.

The finale saw Smith walking the runway in a white shirt with the phrase "I love Japan" printed on the back, surrounded by models in rainbow colored shirts. This recalled a t-shirt Smith designed earlier this year, the proceeds of which were donated to tsunami relief efforts.

"The finale was a rainbow feeling to leave all the audience feeling positive," the designer said. "Through war and tragedy what we must do is remember friendship, conversation, touch, heart, love... We should reassess everyday things."
