If fall was DKNY’s optimistic take on the new global reality, then consider spring a downright perky approach. Donna Karan channeled the positive energy she’s always pitching into a peony print, which anchored the collection with an upbeat attitude. Florals appeared first as graphic black-and-white scribbles and escalated into a colorful pattern play of pink, green and blue prints, some big and bold, others a pastiche of smaller buds and sequins, all of it mixed and matched. If the collection bordered on being too busy at times, the polished, practical silhouettes — skirt suits and slouchy pants, DKNY staples — rooted it in wearability. Even the biker shorts were worn in a most manageable way, peeking out from under skirts and tailored shorts. In between all the pink and peonies were plenty of straight citified looks, such as cool khaki and black jumpsuits, and the accessories, like strappy heels and chain-trimmed bags, further emphasized an urban edge. Still, this was a feel-good collection. And the finale of tank dresses emblazoned with peony collages delivered a young, fun, flower-power punch.
