Between scoring an enviable product placement — Michelle Obama, floral dress, DNC — and his stunning spring collection, Thakoon Panichgul is on a roll. Sophisticated but less first lady-friendly, his lineup was full of lingerie-inspired looks. And Panichgul did more than flirt with the motif. He worked with a hard-soft context, oft-tread designer territory that was never trite in his hands. There were elements of bondage in dresses sporting crisscross cutouts at the midriff, and boudoir with peekaboo bra effects and even a sheer trench. It was chic with a sense of humor, made lighter by cheeky but not cheesy prints — kisses, winks and rose blossoms on leggy stems courtesy of artist Laurie Simmons — which appeared on sheer jumpsuits and pants. And, should Panichgul’s woman want to cover up, blouson cardigans and printed dresses made for more modest proposals, and a very complete collection.
