Minimal may be the Narciso Rodriguez mantra, but even the most minimalist of designers needs to let loose once in a while. And so for spring, Rodriguez did just that to daringly brazen effect. His collection was chock-full of visual stimuli that were at once rigorous and controlled, but dynamic nonetheless. The inspiration for all of this was Japan.
So there were obi, kimono and ninja-star references, a motif Rodriguez worked in myriad ways. They appeared as precise diamond grid prints on draped silk georgette dresses, and turned delightfully witty when rendered as houndstooth. Also key here: a strong bandage story, with graphic lines cutting across or following the body at all angles. Bold bandeau strips crisscrossed at the waist, the bust and back, while cage-like patterns encircled the bodice of a two-tone silk dress. Smaller stripes, tape-like, accented dress fronts for some simple color-contrast embellishment, as in the green linen toile dress worn by Natasha Poly. It was all hot and sexy.
And if strict is not your style, Rodriguez offered some great, clean tailored numbers and injected a bit of romance into the mix, in gowns trailing chiffon ribbons and a few prettily embroidered dresses.
