Georgina Chapman is closing in as not just a go-to designer for the red-carpet stunners but party dresses for everybody else, too — and she’s doing it beautifully. Chapman leapt from last year’s Raj motifs to ancient Chinese accents this time around — here, a Mandarin collar, there, an ombré pistachio dress evocative of Asian tapestries. The show notes called it an “homage to an age of dynasties and emperors,” which translated to no-holds-barred decadence: embroidered feathers, flowers and yards of glass organza swirling around the body. Her gowns showed plenty of fancy, like the lilac strapless confection cascading with flowers. But not all Chapman’s well-heeled women go to the Crillon, and for them there was plenty to feast on, including columns, sheaths and a shimmy short dress with fringe. These are high-wattage numbers the A-list ought to start laying claim to now.
