Madonna, Regine Chopinot and the Preljocaj Ballet. Jean Paul Gaultier has dressed pop stars and prima ballerinas but for spring, it was he who had all the right moves. His show-stopping modern dance-inspired collection was less about striking a pose than gorgeous graceful motion. Gaultier set the stage with a series of fluid jersey stunners, dressing coats that flew away to reveal connected twisted-and-tied bodysuits underneath. They would have made Martha Graham proud. Likewise for the following jersey pieces, suspender pants and dresses that draped around the body with languid ease. It was a chic and controlled Gaultier moment.
He broke it up with terrific house signatures: waistcoats tailored sharp as ever at the shoulders and cut away in the back for a surprise peek-a-boo effect. For evening, Gaultier took to the Twenties with boudoir inspired looks, such as lovely lacy lingerie slipdresses worn with colorful fur stoles and strappy bondage dresses that worked the sporty side of sexy. Between all that jazz and the exuberant dance trio that opened and closed the presentation, Gaultier put on a terrific show.
