Anyone who thought Veronica Etro was incapable of toning down her overquirked wanderlust was in for a pleasant surprise. Her spring collection was one of her most focused and cleaned-up efforts yet, beginning with the first group of pajamalike, ticking-stripe ensembles. They were fresh and simple by Etro standards, as were the solid silk pants and jackets that followed. Such a sporty moment didn’t last long, since Etro switched gears to her beloved paisley and ethnic mode. But even here, she was much more subdued, with parachute dresses and pleated trousers, cabochon-encrusted tops and sari-inspired jumpsuits. Instead of piling on too much of this and that, she held back, and it made a big difference.
