Diane von Furstenberg has long believed in the power of pretty, always celebrating interesting, accomplished women in her work. This season’s inspiration: Diana Vreeland, for the freedom she brought to women’s wardrobes, one in line with, von Furstenberg said before the show, “the new freedom I hope is in the air.” That translated into a spring parade of diaphanously turned-out power bohemians, who, the designer mused, have “the strength of a goddess and the attitude of a rockstar.” (Make that movie star, tennis star, and multi-hyphenate star, as Uma Thurman, Venus Williams and Jennifer Lopez were just a few of the celebs making for ample front row wattage.) From the feather-and-flower headgear to the ultrafem frocks — ruffles, sequins and lace — most of girls were decked head-to-toe in flou. A bounty of florals bloomed on everything from diaphanous chiffon dresses to sheer harem pants and even tailored pieces came studded with sequins. They were fun, flirty and, like the new supersize fringed, floral and beaded bags, impossible to ignore. And legions of DVF devotees will love wearing them. Some of her fans, however, might feel a bit left out, as von Furstenberg seemed to have spent all of her attention on a festive flower child, leaving her working girl with, a smart khaki safari shift aside, a bit of a power struggle.
