It was scrunch time backstage at Topshop Unique Sunday as hairstylist Samantha Hillerby infused an Eighties vibe into coifs with dollops of volumizing mousse and lashings of hairspray.
“The inspiration came from Bananarama, Boy George and Madonna,” said Hillerby. “The collection is very Eighties, so we’re really taking it there. It’s quite young, quite girly and fun.”
Hillerby scrunched mousse into hair before drying with a diffuser and brushing to create volume. She then separated the hair into two sections as if to create pigtails, which she drew together and attached. A section at the front was worked into a quiff and the look was finished with floppy fabric bows.
“It’s up, it’s down, it’s a little all over the place,” said Hillerby.
Meanwhile, MAC Cosmetics makeup artist Miranda Joyce channeled the decade through dark eyes and lips.
“There is an element of punk in there,” she said, adding she used cream-based products rather than powders for the look. “Normally, I love powder, but I don’t want that perfection.”
Joyce created a dark eye using an eye pencil in Feline, which she ran close to eyelashes before smudging over the lid with her fingers. She worked a smidge of shimmering gold into brow bones and up into eyebrows.
“It gives sheen and highlights,” she said. Eyes were finished off with black Plush Lash mascara. She used Blushcreme in a pink hue to create a strong Eighties-influenced cheek, while lips were coated with Cream Color Base in Bat Black.
