Backstage at the Proenza Schouler show Monday, models’ bright red lips almost glowed in the darkness of the Park Avenue Armory.
The look was inspired by the young working women of World War II, who, while toiling away at their factory jobs, looked glamorous with their red pouts and polished hair, noted Diane Kendal for MAC Cosmetics. To create the siren lip, she mixed red pigment with a neon pink sheen.
Skin was kept fresh and bright, with a bit of bronze along the bottom cheekbone for contour and “toughness.” Kendal then smudged some brown pigment around the eye, and filled in brows straight across the arc.
Hairstyles, created by Didier Malige for GHD, also recalled an earlier era.
“The look is very 1920s — with longer hair brought to one side,” said Omar Lopez, lead stylist for GHD.
Stylists created a modern, finger-wave curl by rocking the GHD heat styler back and forth down four sections of the hair, creating a slightly imperfect finish. They set the look with GHD Sea Spray and Ultimate Hair Spray.
For models with short hair, stylists bumped up the shine with Precision Wax, in a bid to foil the matte clothing and mirror the shiny accessories marching down the runway, said Lopez.
