Valentino Resort 2015

Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pierpaolo Piccioli referenced the magical, colorful world of Frida Kahlo for Valentino resort. They made it a point not to take the inspiration too literally, instead working to capture Kahlo’s audacious spirit. “Individuality remains a central point in our stylistic path,” Chiuri said, with Piccioli adding, “We are fascinated by the figure of the female artist, a character able to live following her own schemes and rules, not subjected to any kind of protocol.”

Their eclectic collection ranged from romantic frocks — including a white tulle maxidress embroidered with colorful flowers, trees and insects — to utilitarian outerwear, such as an olive parka softened by painted and embroidered butterflies.

Nature was worked with a Seventies vibe for a few of the looks. Tie-neck silk blouses, for instance, came in animal patterns and were worn with suede A-line skirts decorated with studded butterfly and bird motifs. And speaking of the Seventies, Chiuri and Piccioli borrowed a graphic rainbow design created by Valentino Garavani in 1973, showing it in bold mixes on a cashmere double-breasted coat, radzimir silk shorts, a silk pleated dress and even bags and shoes.
