At the Gramercy Park Hotel on Friday night, where Tommy Hilfiger hosted a small dinner to toast its spring collections, Corinne Bailey Rae, offered up an almost-unprovoked social critique of the brand’s latest advertisements.
“I like what they’ve done with ‘The Hilfigers’ campaign,” the British singer-songwriter said. “It’s kind of Tennebaumsy, but it includes some brown people, which is always nice. The idea that there’s the brown people and the white people and they’re in a family together is a big thing for America I think. My family’s not as handsome as those guys obviously…” WWD was incredulous.
“Well, maybe, they’re not as well-dressed, but they’ve got the good DNA,” she laughed. “But my family is a mixture of white people and black people on both sides so I like the look of it. Except for they’re not all rich.”
The dinner was split between two tables: one anchored by Hilfiger and the other by Peter Brant, whose Interview magazine co-sponsored the affair, and who (speaking of “The Royal Tennenbaums”) spent a large portion of the night chatting with Owen Wilson. The actor was less talkative when WWD approached.
Other guests included a few of the attendees from that afternoon’s Hilfiger men’s show, such as Brad Richards of the New York Rangers, Kellan Lutz and James Marsden.
As dinner wrapped, and guests headed upstairs to a more raucous after party, Malin Akerman was happy to offer up a fashion week scheduling pro tip or two.
“I got out in good time,” she said of her Friday front row appearances. “I left an hour before every show… Just go early so you’re not stressing and sweating. Go early, grab a drink.”
