PUBLIC IMAGE: Dolce & Gabbana’s spring campaign came to life Saturday as the actors featured — including Francesco Scianna, Primo Reggiani, Chiara Francini and Beppe Fiorello — took in the brand’s men’s wear show on Saturday. “It will make fashion closer to a larger public,” mused Fiorello, whose long-standing career in both movies and television makes him a recognizable celebrity in Italy. “It was an incredible emotion because the campaign is focused on the history of cinema and to be able to trace back the steps of Anna Magnani, for example, was incredible,” added Francini.
A video on the making of the campaign, “La Bella Estate” [or “The Beautiful Summer”] was to be screened later at a cocktail event. Fiorello praised Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana’s skills as backstage directors. “It comes natural to them and they know how to communicate. The brief was to simply be ourselves, in a natural way. The designers were very attentive to the light or the movement of a hand. I suggested they should give directing a shot,” said the actor.
For Oliver Jackson-Cohen, whose mother is London designer Betty Jackson, acting in Ridley Scott’s HBO series on the death of Edward II required considerable more preparation. “I had to take horse-riding and sword-fighting lessons and then do it while wearing armor,” said Jackson-Cohen gamely. And describing his role as the Earl of Shiring, he noted with a chuckle: “Let’s just say he was not a nice man.” Model David Gandy is certainly that, as he’s focusing on charity work, working on founding “The Blue Steel Appeal,” whose name takes a cue from the Ben Stiller-fronted “Zoolander” movie. Gandy, who lost three family members to cancer, is looking at tapping into fashion to help research.
Solange Knowles, Tali Lennox, Bianca Balti and British rapper Tinie Tempah, whose second record will be out this summer, also took in the show.
