Yohji Yamamoto Men's RTW Fall 2009
You’ve got to salute Yohji Yamamoto for making his dark, roomy clothes compelling. For fall, the Japanese designer mixed a bit of hobo chic with cleaner sartorial elements to create a roughed-up beatnik look that was incontestably cool. Voluminous trousers, many lopped off mid-calf, were paired with tailored coats, while Yamamoto plied two of his favorite themes – work wear and deconstruction - in jackets with utility details or coats turned inside out to expose printed linings. Chunky knit ensembles, pajama shirts and even a dressing gown-like coat rounded out Yamamoto’s funky show. It seemed perfect for a guy down on his luck. Or if he hasn’t lost his job, at least he can dress like he has.
