Hermes Men's RTW Fall 2009
The Hermès man is too dignified to make a loud fashion statement and why should he? For fall, designer Veronique Nichanian turned out a classic collection with just enough “je ne sais quoi” to elevate the Hermès man above the crowd. (And to keep an important business humming, since men’s wear accounts for almost half of Hermes’ ready-to-wear sales.) She sprinkled acid yellow and red accents via pleated gabardine trousers or cable knit sweaters. A nylon windbreaker in vermillion or lemon seemed more appropriate for the choppy coasts of Brittany than the chic boulevards of Paris. Yet Nichanian tamed each outburst of color with classic tailoring in subdued tones such as gray, navy or black. Among the chicest ensemble was a sharply cut cashmere and wool flannel jacket with a shadowing effect on the lapels, paired with tapered flannel trousers with chalk stripes. It was a distinguished collection of discreet luxury, save for one sumptuous crocodile coat that prompted one retailer to quip: “I’m sure that costs more than my apartment.”
