Gianfranco Ferré Men's RTW Fall 2009
Instead of placing brand heritage front and center, Ferré designers Tommaso Aquilano and Roberto Rimondi looked the other way with a futuristic first foray into men’s wear. The duo brought an avant-garde vision to the house and contrasted ultra slim tailoring in shimmering techno-fabrics with cocooning outerwear. Demonstrative volume at the neck – such as an elevated funnel-like collar on a cashmere coat – and heavy knits were also focal points, nods to the late founder. The designers’ craftsmanship and architectural flair should be applauded and felt coherent in men’s wear, but they may have veered too far from the traditional Ferré man. The question is: Will he follow suit?
