There’s no place like home – particularly in a downturn - and so Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana went back to their roots with a polished black and white collection inspired by Sicily. Before the show, Gabbana said unstable times called for “family values, tradition” and “the important things in life.” Impeccable tailoring must rank right up there, because the duo made it their big statement of the season. Riffing on formalwear, they added velvet panels to trench coats that were perfect for a stroll around Palermo, and paired narrow-lapel tuxedo jackets with just about everything - even silk boxers. In a mix of sporty and dressy, quilted satin track pants with a tuxedo stripe came paired with elongated jackets and velvet slippers. But austere times don’t always call for bleak colors, so the designers interspersed their two-tone looks with flashes of fuchsia and dusty pinks. “They are the colors of the church and the clothing of the church,” Gabbana explained. As a finale to this elegant and wearable collection, out came sumptuous dinner jackets, each hand-woven out of grosgrain and silk ribbons. Screens overhead showed workers intertwining the strips, underscoring another key Italian tradition: craftsmanship.
