Rei Kawakubo sure knows how to throw a wild – and surrealist - tea party. Start with trompe l’oeil effects and panels of contrasting fabric fronting otherwise staid suits. Affix vest shapes to dress shirts, for additional illusion. Throw in ruffles, gender-bending skirts, fuzzy leopard-spotted fabrics and kooky, elaborate hats. Et voila – a potent brew.
