Alexander McQueen Men's RTW Fall 2009
Transporting his audience to a gas-lit London street in the 19th century, Alexander McQueen showed a traditional, gentlemanly collection alive with craftsmanship and virility. "I wanted men’s wear to be more masculine, " he said.
Taking as his theme the famed boxing clubs of East London, the designer conjured a
diverse cast of British archetypes - some played by real London boxers with menacing intensity.
Traditional English fabrics were tailored into exceptionally cut
suits and coats that accentuated the body : broad on top, tapered at the bottom.
Sportswear alluded to hunters and laborers from the countryside through
Britishisms such as Harris tweed, tartans, Fair Isle sweaters, hunting trousers and chesterfield coats. Upper-crust characters made their entrances in grand fur coats, or handknit sweaters of equally impressive dimensions
.
An undercurrent of violence was heightened in evening clothes by slash pockets
and red silk linings. One black coat appeared from a distance to be splattered
with blood, but in fact was painted with red flowers.
For added drama, the designer styled his looks with leather aprons and breastplates, tall army boots,
walking sticks, cocked Homburg hats and red athletic tape wrapped around clenched fists.
Leave it to McQueen to elevate solidly commercial fare into a thrilling, cinematic show.
