1909 Victorinox RTW Fall 2009

Pierre-Henri Mattout delivered a youthful, modern collection while never losing sight of function.

The inaugural showing of Pierre-Henri Mattout’s 1909 collection, in only its second season, attempted to broaden the scope of Victorinox beyond performance outerwear and travel gear. Mattout delivered a youthful, modern collection while never losing sight of function, the core value of Victorinox, maker of the Swiss Army Knife. The performance aspect of athletic suits, tapered ski pants and padded outerwear was self-evident.

Gradually, technical materials and futuristic surfaces gave way to a cozy, après-ski mood. Long johns, a mottled sweater set and groovy patterned shirts looked right for fireside cocktails. In contrast, austere vests, tailored jackets and trousers were Mattout’s nod to the Amish and their rites of adolescent experimentation. A varsity jacket and a numbered jersey also added youth appeal. Whether it’s enough to get a young fashion consumer excited about the brand remains to be seen.
