Pity the half-dozen grad-student types toiling in the member work center in the basement of the Harvard Club in midtown Manhattan on Monday night. It can’t be easy cramming with a fashion week party unfolding above your study session. Marc Jacobs had taken over the building’s first floor for its semiannual friends and family celebration, where a swirl of young and peppy sales associates partied among the rich mahogany and worn leather trappings. To clarify: Marc Jacobs the brand had taken over the space. The designer himself, presumably still working on his postponed runway show, did not make it to the party, which was billed instead as a post-Marc by Marc Jacobs bash.
Not that any partygoers particularly cared.
“The show hasn’t happened yet? I didn’t even know,” said Zoë Kravitz, standing with boyfriend Penn Badgley near the DJ booth, where Alison Mosshart was selecting tracks. “Just here for the party. My friend’s DJing. That’s the only reason I’m here.”
Others in attendance included Trish Goff, Michele Hicks and Jessica Stam, who posed for photographers in front of the hanging portraits of university presidents past.
Early in the night there was the sight of a drag queen reapplying her makeup in a men’s room down the hall from that study center.
“Sorry, Harvard Club,” she laughed, taking stock of the situation. “At least I’m wearing cocktail attire.”
