If only the walls could talk. L’Wren Scott and Mick Jagger chose the fabled Café Royal on Regent Street — whose famous patrons included Oscar Wilde and Winston Churchill — to fete her London Fashion Week debut.
Its gilded splendor hammered home the Klimt theme of the American designer’s fall collection, which she related to British jeweler Shaun Leane, explaining that she used real gold leaf for shoes, clothes and coiling tattoos on wrists and necks.
Why 23-karat gold, and not 18 or 24? “It’s the best color,” she shrugged as the likes of Ronnie Wood, Zaha Hadid, Daphne Guinness and Bryan Adams poured into the party. As for those tattoos, “It lasts for like five days,” Scott enthused. “You can travel with your jewelry, darling.”
“L’Wren and I are the perfect 10. She’s the one and I’m the zero,” said the diminutive Bobbi Brown about the tall Scott.
Alice Eve, her curves poured into a graphic black-and-white number by Scott, marveled about the transformative powers of her dresses: “You zip it up, and it’s like, ‘Wow, I exist.’”
The British actress just wrapped “Star Trek Into Darkness,” in which she plays the “superbrain” Dr. Carol Marcus, and “Eye of Winter,” a crime drama filmed entirely in upstate New York.
“I play a woman from the Catskills who runs a hotel and it becomes a brothel,” she said, noting the director enforced an American accent during filming and off-duty moments.
Wood arrived at the party accompanied by his new wife, Sally Humphreys, a theater producer. “I have four big paintings to finish before the end of April, when we start rehearsing again,” said Wood, dropping a hint that The Rolling Stones might take to the road later this year, following their sellout anniversary tour late last year.
He gave no further details, saying that he hoped to get to the art studio at his home in Ireland to finish the artwork.
Jagger, who admitted he’d only been to Café Royal once before, despite its longtime reputation as a hangout for rock stars and glitterati, said he has some new projects cooking “but I haven’t announced them yet.” As for the Café Royal, he said, “It was big…up until World War I.”
Later, Leane noted his business is ticking along nicely. “I’m in talks to become creative director of Asprey,” said the designer, who already creates collections for the brand. “And I might be opening shops in China, too,” said Leane, who earlier this month was awarded the title International Designer of the Year by Harper’s Bazaar Jewelry China.
After cocktails, guests migrated upstairs to a gilded ballroom where two long tables were set beneath a golden ceiling dotted with 106 paintings depicting love scenes.
During after-dinner speeches, Scott said Jagger was at the ready to pitch in on preparations for her show, especially when she encountered a shortage of models. “It’s really tough to find new girls in London,” she said to a round of laughs.
