Newscaster Ann Curry was a little taken aback by the 1,000-person crowd, which included Matthew McConaughey in the front row. “I rarely have my nails done, and I have sparkles on my arm — I don’t know how well that will go over the next time I go to Pakistan,” she said.
Curry was one of the few not hawking her own film, book, TV show, hair care line, skin care products or fashion. Dita Von Teese, Camila Alves, Taraji P. Henson, Laila Ali, Dania Ramirez, Amurri, Richards, Suzanne Somers and a host of others had something to sell and were more than happy to work the room.
Eve was talking up her forthcoming album, “Lip Lock,” but don’t cross her professionally. “I fired everyone in my life last year and cleared out all the cobwebs,” she said.
Von Teese, in Zac Posen, seemed aware of her omnipresence. “Right now I am trying not to be photographed with my mouth open,” she said. Richards, in a Matthew Williamson gown, buttoned up when asked about ex-husband Charlie Sheen. She did open up about a new book — “but it won’t be a tell-all.”
Gayle King has had it with the questions about her relationship with Oprah Winfrey. “I have been asked and asked so many times,” she said. “And there’s nothing wrong with it [being a couple]. I would tell you if we were and so would she.”
King was beyond enthused to be wearing a Donna Karan gown, excited the designer had “picked” her.
Olympic skater Johnny Weir (in Gareth Pugh metallic leggings) dropped by while the models were lining up. Chris Benz also ducked backstage to cheer on his catwalker, Amurri, whose mother, Susan Sarandon, was out front. Ali said she relies on her father Muhammad’s advice: “Never step on anybody to get ahead.” McConaughey’s partner, Alves, was not having preshow heart palpitations, nor did she need his advice. “This is a girl thing,” she said, flexing her muscles for effect.
Dressed in street clothes after the show, Bedingfield stopped dead in her tracks heading for the door. “Oh, are those from tonight?” she cooed to the house photographer, who was scrolling through images. “Pick that one.”
