A Winning Formula for Design

Fashion and mathematics may seem like chalk and cheese, but the two realms collided in Dai Fujiwara’s collection for Issey Miyake on Friday.

NEW DIMENSIONS: Fashion and mathematics may seem like chalk and cheese, but the two realms collided in Dai Fujiwara’s collection for Issey Miyake on Friday.

 

The Japanese designer contacted leading mathematician William Thurston to exchange ideas about three-dimensional topology, which uses algebraic tools to describe shape – and the Cornell professor was only too happy to oblige. “I’ve always thought the clothing world was connected to the mathematics world, partly through my mother, who has sewed throughout her life,” Thurston said.

 

He provided Fujiwara’s team with eight geometry link models, which turned into the outlines of jackets and tops. Thurston said it was not the first time he has helped designed clothes: He once made a dress with his mother to demonstrate one of his theories, only to find a very similar design gracing the window of a Paris boutique.
