Lipstick and Leather at Yves Saint Laurent

Fashion fusion provided the inspiration for hairstylist Julien d'Ys at the Yves Saint Laurent show Monday.

"The leather wrap reminds me both of a Moroccan Fez and the hats that women in Brittany traditionally wear," he said backstage. D'Ys combined these notions with a style he created for Yves Saint Laurent in the Nineties, which was shot by photographer Peter Lindbergh. "Et voila: it's that look revisited for the contemporary woman," he said.

Using lashings of a Japanese gel by Tamaris, d'Ys pulled hair into a tight bun high on the crown of models' heads. He then wrapped netting around the bun to pad out the style and tied a piece of thin black leather into a wide headpiece. The wrapping and knots behind the bun added movement, giving the ensemble an ethnic edge and a sophisticated silhouette.

Working with Yves Saint Laurent products, makeup artist Tom Pecheux complemented the hairstyle with a classic, strong face. Lips and brows dominated, with Pecheux using lipstick in shade number 17, a dark red hue, mixed with a true red pigment to create a pout like "a dark red rose."

Using a pencil in a shade darker than each model's hair, he drew a line on top of the brow, finishing above the natural growth to give a dramatic lift. Eyes and cheeks were bare, while the skin got a light covering of Top Secrets Flash Radiance Skincare Brush.
