Yohji Yamamoto Contrasts Kooky With Classic
Music set the tone for beauty at Yohji Yamamoto Friday night.
Two radically contrasting pieces used during the show — a piano concerto by Chopin and a raw rock guitar solo — inspired hairstylist Eugene Souleiman. For one side of models' heads, Souleiman used a dusting of powder to give a matte, old-world texture, then attached long locks loosely to the center parting. Plastic netting inside the quiff provided shape.
For the other side, he slicked hair close to the head using lashings of High Hair Hairspray from Wella, who sponsored Souleiman. He then sprayed temporary color onto that side, in fuchsia pink and vivid red. "Overall, I wanted something that looked at once very old but with a psychedelic oddity to it," he said.
Makeup followed suit, with an eccentric, imbalanced face provided by red liner from MAC Cosmetics that was applied in an arch over one socket. Red, defined lips contrasted with "imperfect, slightly mottled skin," said makeup artist Pat McGrath. She used white foundation, unevenly applied, and left eyes bare.
