Ruffian Beauty: Channeling Cool Royalty

Ruffian's 2009 fall showcase drew from both French- and American-inspired looks.

American royalty was channeled with hair and makeup inspired by classic beauty, Carolyn Bessette Kennedy, at Ruffian's 2009 fall showcase which drew from both French- and American-inspired looks. "We blow dried hair and gave it body and structure," said Neil Moodie for Bumble and bumble. "We wanted it to look like she's been living in it like its a couple days old." Moodie used Bumble thickening hair spray and styling cream to create body, while root lifter added volume and some height. "It is somewhat deconstructed," said Moody. "It's a loose, easy look, very beautiful, very cool and gives off a New York American feel with initial structure, but not overly groomed."

 

Faces at Ruffian were very "dimensional," sculpted by MAC Sculpt and Shape powders, said makeup artist James Kaliardos. "It's pale on the cheeks, it's a little reflective, a satin sheen, not totally matte," he said. Lips were painted with a rich and slightly orange pigmented rich red — dubbed Ruffian Red, which MAC created for the designer's fall collection. Eyes were nude hued and a beige liner, to neutralize redness, was used on inner eyelids. "It's about going to a classic and adding a little twist." About the girl who he envisioned wearing the look, Kaliardos said, "She's confident, hip, young with a bit of a transparent feeling."
