Nicole Farhi Flirts With the Forties

Sam McKnight worked a trio of textures into hair backstage at Nicole Farhi. The hairstylist gelled hair into a side part at the front of the head, worked waves into the mid lengths and straightened the ends using GHD irons. “There is an echo of a Forties wave,” he said. “It’s clean and masculine at the front and feminine at the back.” McKnight used Pantene mousse and gel to realize the look.

Val Garland, working with MAC Cosmetics, also gave a fresh spin to a retro look for makeup. “It’s clumsy Forties,” she said. “It’s all about a fresh face and skin. There’s a sheen on the skin and a damson wet lip.” Garland used Prep + Prime to create a dewy face and blended lipstick in Smoked Purple, Sin and Charred Red for lips. Gloss in Blackfire was swiped across eyelids and around to the tops of cheeks to give a “film noir” effect, according to Garland.
