Man Ray's Ladies Mark Malandrino

"It's modern art without being pretentious," said hairstylist Odile Gilbert.

"It's modern art without being pretentious," said hairstylist Odile Gilbert as she discussed the look she created for Wella at the Malandrino show Thursday morning, noting that Man Ray photographs provided inspiration for the look.

The style was an updo with three round hairpieces of varying colors and shapes attached to the natural hair, which was pulled up into chignons. There were 30 models and, therefore, 90 hairpieces, and each was created by hairstylist Eva Scrivo.

Each roughly egg-shaped hairpiece was netted and some pieces hung over the forehead. Also, nets extended down over models' faces. "Not everyone looks the same," she said. "They are all different, but they all have the same spirit."

On the makeup side, artist Tom Pecheux, who worked on behalf on MAC Cosmetics, drew a solid, shimmering blue-gray line across the top lid to create an "effect, or illusion" meant to make the eyes appear bigger. There was nothing on the cheeks and the lips were kept nude.

"Between the eyes and the hair, I think it's enough," he said.
