THE WRITE STUFF: Louis Vuitton is writing some new chapters around its boutique at Saint-Germain-des-Prés, in the heart of Paris’ historic literary quarter. On Thursday, the luxury brand is to open a temporary exhibition space at 170 Boulevard Saint-Germain dedicated to the world of writing via a selection of books and artworks. And in December, Vuitton plans to open a boutique around the corner at 6 Place Saint-Germain-des-Prés that will be dedicated to pens, other writing paraphernalia and the brand’s first foray into stationery.
The developments foreshadow an eventual overhaul and expansion of the multilevel boutique, part of the Vuitton network since 1995. Situated between Café de Flore and Les Deux Magots — two storied cafés whose famous habitués included Ernest Hemingway, Simone de Beauvoir and Albert Camus — the boutique will be enlarged thanks to retail space Vuitton acquired that was previously occupied by the jeweler Arthus-Bertrand and the historic bookstore La Hune, which relocated to another corner location one block away.
Titled “L’Ecriture est un voyage” (Writing is a journey, in English) and open to the public, the exhibition runs through Dec. 31 and is also to host weekly conversations with such cultural figures as French singer and actress Juliette Gréco and artist Marie-Ange Guilleminot. Visitors can leaf through a selection of books, which can be purchased at La Hune nearby, or gaze at works by such artists as Ed Ruscha and Claude Closky that have as their theme either traveling or writing.
