Tommy Hilfiger

Tommy Hilfiger is the principal designer and honorary chairman of Tommy Hilfiger, the All-American mega brand known for its classic red, blue and white flag logo. The self-taught designer is known for his casual style and strong links to the music industry.

Hilfiger attended Elmira Free Academy, a public high school in the state of New York. He did not go on to college; instead, he started his own chain of stores called People’s Place that went bankrupt in 1977. That’s when he headed to New York City. He introduced his first signature collection in 1985.

He took his eponymous company public in 1992 and sales rose steadily through the ‘90s, as he introduced men’s suits, women’s sportswear, fragrance and eyewear. Record sales for the brand in the late 1990s was followed by a market saturation of sportswear in the United States, and Hilfiger sold his company to the private investment company Apax Partners in 2006.

By 2007, Tommy designs had distribution in 65 countries. That same year, Hilfiger struck a contract with the U.S. department store Macy’s to carry his sportswear exclusively.
