Kevin Mansell
Kevin Mansell is president and chief executive of Kohl’s, the moderate department store chain based in the midwestern United States.
Mansell has been president since 1999 and added the ceo title in 2008, when the fast-growing retailer opened its 1,000th store. In collaboration with former ceo and current chairman Larry Montgomery, Mansell helped engineer the “only at Kohl’s” campaign to to highlight their portfolio of private label and exclusive merchandise such as the Simply Vera Vera Wang line.
He attended University of Missouri and took his first retail job in 1975 at the now-defunct discount chain Venture Stores. Mansell joined Kohl’s as divisional merchandise manager in 1982, when the chain operated just 14 stores. Five years later, he was promoted to general merchandise manager, and later to senior executive vice president of merchandise and marketing.
Mansell took over as president in 1999, as part of Kohl’s long-term, strategic succession plan. Mansell and chairman Montgomery have now worked together in senior executive roles for more than 20 years.
Currently -- in contrast to some chain stores who have cut back expansion plans due to a difficult economic environment -- Kohl’s continues to expand, opening 46 stores on one day in October 2008.
