Andrea Jung is chairman and chief executive officer of Avon Products Inc., which sells beauty and personal care products directly through a legion of 5 million independent sales agents worldwide.

Jung is credited with leading the company through a turnaround beginning in late 2005. The de-layering of management ranks, realigning of global manufacturing facilities, reducing product offering, and a boosted media spend have been paying off. Early in her tenure as ceo, before Avon hit its slowdown, Jung drove sales momentum and five years of double-digit growth by updating product lines and branding. The same year she was named ceo, in 1999, Avon ditched its dowdy “Avon Calling!” jingle and billed itself “The Company for Women.”

Toronto-born Jung graduated from Princeton University in 1979 with a BA in English literature. She entered the management training program at Bloomingdale’s and later took executive positions at I. Magnin and Neiman Marcus. Jung joined Avon in 1994 as president of its product marketing group and moved up the marketing ranks until her appointment as Avon ceo in 1999. She was named chairman in 2001. Jung expanded Avon’s reach to Russia, China and Brazil — its second largest market after the United States.

She serves on the boards of Apple and General Electric.
