Escapism, a theme that first cropped up in Pantone’s most popular color schemes last year, is still going strong for spring. To try to help consumers forget their cares, designers tapped into hues often seen in Africa, India, Peru and Turkey. Honeysuckle topped the charts for the season’s leading color for women, followed by Regatta, Coral Rose and Beeswax. Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute, said, “This time, everything is a little more exotic. It really has to do with everything that is happening in the world. There is still a lot of concern about the economy and life in general. It is very natural that designers would have those things in their thought process as they choose their colors.”

The Great Escapes:Top 10 Men's Pantone Colors
Designers have set their sites on some far-off places for spring shades.
-
1. REGATTA PANTONE 18-4039
Percentage of designers who used this color: 16.01 percent
Tommy Hilfiger is a fan of this shade. “This is not the same ole, same ole navy. If we are talking about energy levels in blues — Regatta is the highest,” Eiseman said.
-
2. BARBERRY PANTONE 18-1760
Percentage of designers who used this color: 15.65 percent
Maybe it has something to do with the reissue of “The Ivy,” the updated version of “The Preppy Handbook” or just fashion’s current interest in an updated prepster look, but Barberry has come on strong for men.
-
3. TURF GREEN PANTONE 17-0119
Percentage of designers who used this color: 12.43 percent
Women are taking to army green with gusto for fall in the form of military jackets, but men have been on board with green for years. “Green is a guy color. It’s one they always go for,” Eiseman said. “Even the name Turf Green conjures up images of athletic fields or golf courses.”
-
4. FLINT GRAY PANTONE 16-5803
Percentage of designers who used this color: 12.09 percent
“There is always that need for practicality. Gray has been a staple for men in business forever, but now it is even more important,” Eiseman said. “It is seen as more of a fashion color.”
-
5. RUSSET PANTONE 18-1235
Percentage of designers who used this color: 11.16 percent
“Dramatically deep” Russet is more typically seen in the fall, but more designers are using it as a spring tone, she said. That preference is in step with seasonless dressing, which many see as a selling point with consumers. “People are more inclined to wear these colors all year round,” she said.
-
6. BLUE CURACAO PANTONE 15-4825
Percentage of designers who used this color: 9.15 percent
Reminiscent of the Caribbean and other easy-breezy tropical destinations, Blue Curacao gives wearers a lift from their everyday concerns. It also offers men another option to more traditional shades of blue, according to Eiseman.
-
7. FIRECRACKER PANTONE 16-1452
Percentage of designers who used this color: 8.91 percent
Firecracker is considered to be a little bright for men’s wear, but more guys are starting to take to it. “Some guys lag behind with new colors, but once they do try them — they get it,” Eiseman said.
-
8. BEESWAX PANTONE 14-0941
Percentage of designers who used this color: 5.46 percent
This warm yellow is another color that conjures up feelings of far-off lands, like a Turkish bazaar.
-
9. LINEN PANTONE 12-1008
Percentage of designers who used this color: 5.12 percent
With its slightly pinkish cast, linen is a becoming shade for many men. It suits a wide range of complexions and the name alone is something that appeals to men. “When they try things on in this tone, they find it’s flattering,” Eiseman said.
-
10. LAVENDER PANTONE 15-3817
Percentage of designers who used this color: 4.02 percent
It has taken a few decades, but men are warming up to the idea of wearing purple. Eiseman said, “In the Eighties, men would laugh at the idea. Now we’re seeing we’re men from it,” she said.
