MORE WHITNEY: The Whitney Houston magazine covers continue to roll out this week, with Rolling Stone’s cover story on “The Diva and her Dark Side” by David Browne and the April issue of Essence will hit newsstands with a 16-page in-book tribute from friends and family, including Dionne Warwick, Terry McMillan, Jordin Sparks and Debra Martin Chase. A spokeswoman from Essence said the magazine will explore Houston’s legacy broadly, “from fashion muse to spiritual girlfriend, with a tone specific to black women.”
The cover photograph of Houston was taken in 1990, right around the time she filmed “The Bodyguard.” The April issue was technically closed to advertisers when Houston died but it will come as no surprise that a few more pages were added from those, “who understood Whitney’s deep relationship to Essence readers,” said a spokeswoman. For the first quarter, the title was down 19 percent in ad pages, according to Media Industry Newsletter.
