American Media Inc.’s National Enquirer and Star magazine began consolidating their Los Angeles-based reporting staffs this week. Reporters for both titles, who already share office space on the West Coast, will now work cooperatively as part of what Star editor in chief Candace Trunzo called an “AMI news bureau.” Editors in New York will decide how to divide stories. “It’s a case of us working smarter and cutting out duplication,” said Enquirer editor in chief Tony Frost.
The restructuring came with four cuts: Star reporters Debbie Emery and Sandra Clark and the Enquirer’s Phil Kim, in addition to one office assistant. The reporters will have the opportunity to work as freelancers. No further cuts are scheduled at this time.
A spokesman for the company said the changes have been planned for “quite some time” and are not related to AMI’s Chapter 11 filing in U.S. Bankruptcy Court last November or to the magazines’ circulation numbers. “Over the past 13 weeks, the celebrity category is down 13 percent, OK?” Frost said. “And the Enquirer is flat.”
