A NEW GAME?: A reorganization of Time Inc.’s Sports Group has just begun and layoffs are likely imminent in the next month. Editor Terry McDonell has already asked for volunteers to accept a buyout package and if he doesn’t receive enough responses, involuntary layoffs will take place. Sources said it was McDonell, not Time Inc., that is behind the move to more fully integrate the group, which includes Sports Illustrated and SI.com and has 210 employees on the editorial side. “The process of a deeper integration of the editorial staff has begun, which could see a reduction in staff as the process plays out,” said a spokesman. The last time McDonell asked for volunteers to leave the group was back in 2008, when the staff was much larger and less than 50 people ended up receiving pink slips.
