THREE-PEATS: Big surprise at Tuesday’s Digital Ellie ceremony: Adam Moss took home awards in the top two categories. Moss’ New York Magazine won for best Web site and general excellence in digital media — the second time in the three years that the Digital Ellies have been around that Moss’ New York has won for general excellence.
Wired won two Digital Ellie awards as well, taking home honors in design in digital media for its February 2011 iPad edition and for reporting in Spencer Ackerman’s wired.com story, “FBI Teaches Agents: ‘Mainstream’ Muslims Are ‘Violent, Radical.’”
The New York Times Magazine won in the video category and Foreign Policy won in multimedia. Both outfits have won Digital Ellies in each of the three years that American Society of Magazine Editors has been awarding them.
National Geographic won in the best tablet edition category, The Daily Beast’s “Book Beast” won the best Web department category and Time won in the best utility app competition for its Populist iPad App. Rounding out the awards, Men’s Health won in personal service and the American Scholar won in commentary for William Zinsser’s columns.
Now with the digital awards out of the way, ASME can prepare for The National Magazine Awards, which will take place May 3 at the Marriott Marquis in New York.
