SOZZANI SOUNDS OFF: Franca Sozzani would like to see a little less conversation and a little more action from the Catholic Church. Taking to her blog on Nov. 21, the editor in chief of Italian Vogue suggested that instead of simply touring Africa and making speeches, Pope Benedict XVI might donate some of the church’s riches to African causes.
“If, as you rightly said on Nov. 13, charity is compulsory, couldn’t some of the church’s many treasures be given to alleviate so many hellish lives?” Sozzani wrote, addressing the Pope. “And while I agree with you, Holy Father, that those sick with AIDS have a right to respect and treatment…why not reconsider prevention and protection?”
Sozzani also had words for Alessandra Mussolini, granddaughter of Benito Mussolini, niece of Sophia Loren and former actress-turned-politician, who voted against the new Italian government led by Mario Monti.
“Know that for us your lack of support for this new government is a relief,” Sozzani wrote.
