Sources: Elle's Garcia Offered Smaller Role

‘Project Runway’ gig said to hinge on her decision about new role at Elle.

"Project Runway" made Nina Garcia a TV star, and now her future on the reality show could depend on whether she accepts a smaller, consulting role at Elle.

As reported, Garcia was let go from her full-time post as fashion director at the magazine, but sources close to Elle say she has been offered a lesser role – something akin to editor at large. As of Monday afternoon, Garcia was still mulling whether to accept.

An official announcement was expected from Elle on Garcia’s future at the magazine on Monday, but executives at Hachette Filipacchi Media remained mum on the situation as of Monday afternoon.

But according to sources close to “Project Runway”, Garcia’s future with the show depends on her decision to stay at the title. If she chooses to stay on as a contributor to Elle, she will serve as a judge on the show through season five, as Elle remains a partner on the show. The show is currently holding castings for its season five contenders, and will begin taping this summer. The last episode will air after September’s Fashion Week in New York.

If Garcia does not accept the lesser role, and completely severs ties to the magazine, sources say it will be difficult for her to remain as a judge on the show during season five. But that equally would be a blowto Elle, given the high profile Garcia has built on the show both for herself and for the magazine.

Season six of "Project Runway" is also in flux for both Elle and other partners involved in the show. The program will move to Lifetime Networks from Bravo, and it’s not clear whether Elle will be joining the show on its new home.

On Friday, WWD reported Garcia was let go from her position as fashion director at Elle. Speculation had been building for months as to Garcia’s future at the title.
