SHAKE UP AT SELF: New editor in chief Joyce Chang hasn’t wasted any time shuffling her staff at Self magazine. Chang, who was supposed to start on May 1, cut her vacation short by a day, and made an early appearance at her new office at Condé Nast’s headquarters at 4 Times Square. The decisive Chang made a handful of upper-level editorial changes, her most recent being the all-important role of creative director.
For that position, the ex-executive editor of Hearst’s Cosmopolitan raided sister pub O, The Oprah Magazine, hiring its art director Barbara Reyes. The appointment is effective May 21.
Reyes has replaced Self’s creative director of 10 years, Cynthia Searight, who under former editor in chief Lucy Danziger led the look of the magazine. Chang also removed Self’s fashion director of 10 years, Evyan Metzner. That position has yet to be filled, but sources told WWD that Chang has been interviewing candidates.
Other appointments have included former People StyleWatch executive editor Suzanne D’Amato as executive editor, and Glamour’s entertainment editor Rebecca Sinn as entertainment director. Both editors start May 19. On the business side, newly minted publisher Mary Murcko has hired Eric Johnson from NBC News as associate publisher.
It’s clear that Chang is in the process of remaking Self into a sleeker, more modern magazine. Sources told WWD that when Chang was introduced to staff by Condé Nast’s Charles Townsend, Anna Wintour and Robert Sauerberg last month, some Self staffers were less than enthused to meet their new leader.
This is due, in part, to the fact that some in the room had experienced layoffs, having been let go by Cosmo editor in chief Joanna Coles and Chang when the duo arrived at that glossy in 2012.
According to a Self spokeswoman, more appointments are ahead, including the roles of deputy editor and fitness editor.
