T + L’S EURO HIRE: Sarah Miller is back on the travel circuit.
The founding editor of Condé Nast Traveller UK has been tapped to be Travel + Leisure’s European editor, a newly created role for the U.S. publication.
In the job, Miller will work with Travel + Leisure editor in chief Nancy Novogrod and the publication’s New York-based team and contribute news and feature stories, making use of her Rolodex of travel and lifestyle contacts, which span from her 15-year stint as editor of Condé Nast Traveller UK.
Calling herself “a one-man band,” Miller will report to Novogrod and work on ideas for the magazine’s Europe-based stringers. No one will report to Miller, who will remain based in London.
Miller’s first contribution will appear in Travel + Leisure’s January issue and will be about Ian Schrager’s London Edition hotel.
Since she’s left Condé Nast Traveller, Miller has set up a brand strategy firm called Sarah Miller & Partners, in which she worked as a consultant for Condé Nast Traveller China, among other publications.
While that relationship has come to an end, Miller will continue to consult for luxury and lifestyle brands while she serves as Travel + Leisure’s European editor.
When asked about what she’d like to accomplish in her new job, Miller mentioned the lifestyle focus that she brought to Condé Nast Traveller UK and China and how she’d like to similarly build further on the Travel + Leisure “lifestyle brand.”
Another area of intrigue for the editor is the expansion of Travel + Leisure’s digital presence.
“I’m being employed by the print T + L but the brand T + L encompasses digital. I’d hope [the job] would include digital,” Miller said. “Everyone, not just travel magazines, [is] interested in social media and digital. I suspect one would be contributing on a digital basis, too. Everyone is racing into that space.”
Although she’s already penned her first piece, Miller officially starts at Travel + Leisure on Jan. 1.
