RAIN CHECK, PLEASE: There’s nothing like a government shutdown to put a damper on a party. The long arm of the U.S. Congress — and its wrangling — has reached across the Atlantic, and into the Tatler offices in London. The magazine’s editor, Kate Reardon, had organized a drinks party this week at the Connaught hotel to welcome the new U.S. Ambassador to the Court of St. James, Matthew Barzun, and his wife, Brooke Brown Barzun. It has now been postponed, at the ambassador’s request, due to the government shutdown, said a Condé Nast spokeswoman, who added that no new date has been set.
The U.S. Senate confirmed Barzun as ambassador on Aug. 1, and he took up his duties in London on Aug. 23. Barzun served as U.S. Ambassador to Sweden from 2009 to 2011, and President Obama named him National Finance Chair for the 2012 reelection campaign.
