Sephora Sounds Off in Le Journal du Dimanche

Beauty retailer took out a full-page ad decrying a possible law that would force its Paris flagship to close earlier than midnight on Sundays.

NIGHT SHIFT: Sephora took out a full-page advertisement in French weekly Le Journal du Dimanche on Sunday decrying a possible law that would force its Paris flagship to close earlier than midnight on Sundays.

“Sephora, the leader among selective perfumeries on the French market, is among the employers the most active in French distribution with 300 stores and 4,500 employees in France. Its largest store in the world, Sephora Champs-Elysées, is today threatened by the obligation to close at 9 p.m. following legal action taken by an inter-union in Paris that chose to act against work at night for uniquely ideological reasons,” began the ad.

“Sephora deplores this situation and reminds that the current hours of the store on the Champs-Elysées, in place since its opening in 1996, has been met with large support among the employees: More than 90 percent have expressed their favor of this organization and have volunteered to work under the store’s current conditions that propose attractive remuneration,” it stated. “The obligation to close the Sephora Champs-Elysées at 9 p.m. would threaten more than 45 jobs.”

In September, business titan Bernard Arnault, whose luxury group LVMH controls Sephora,  had an audience with France’s Prime Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault, and it was believed the 75 percent tax rate on incomes of more than 1 million euros was discussed.
