STOPPING BY SINGAPORE: In line with its retail push, Monocle magazine just opened a pop-up shop in Singapore. The shop-in-shop at Books Actually, an independent bookstore, will be open through Sunday.
The store carries a mix of Monocle periodicals, Ettinger stationary and Monocle-branded bags from Yoshida & Company's Porter.
Tyler Brûlé, Monocle's editor-in-chief, said at a cocktail party Thursday evening that the Singapore concept was inspired by the success of a similar shop-in-shop in Hong Kong's Lane Crawford department store last year.
"Singapore is probably too close to Hong Kong and Tokyo for another shop," said Brûlé, referring to the magazine's two permanent stores in those Asian cities. "So if we look ahead it's probably further away, in Sydney. But who knows?"
Separately, Trunk Clothiers, a London menswear store 50 percent owned by Winkorp, Monocle's parent company, will open another space in London this April.
Mats Klingberg, Brûlé's partner and Trunk's founder, said in Singapore that Trunk had outgrown its current premises on Chiltern Street and that most of the accessories it retails would move to the new shop, which will also be on the same street. The new Trunk boutique will also carry luggage and interior furnishings.
